Consecutive and liaison suit small meetings and visits, and take about twice as long.

Remote or on-site is a decision about risk first and budget second.

Working across languages is now part of most conferences, trade shows, and business meetings. When you and your audience don’t share a language, the interpreter decides whether the room follows the argument or just the slides.

First, a distinction worth making. Translators work with written text; interpreters work with the spoken word, live. Most events need the second. If you need both, the FAQ on interpreters and translators explains how the two jobs fit together.

The choice of mode comes first, because it decides the equipment, the team, and how long your programme runs.

Simultaneous interpreting

If you’ve ever picked up a receiver and headset at the door of a meeting room, you’ve attended an event with simultaneous interpreting. An interpreter in a booth renders the speaker’s words into another language a few seconds behind them, and the meeting runs at its natural length.

Simultaneous is staffed in pairs: two interpreters per booth, taking turns so that concentration holds for the whole day. It suits events with speakers from several countries, formal presentations, and any programme with a tight schedule.

The trade-off is equipment. A soundproof booth shields the interpreters from the room and keeps their voices out of it; receivers and a technician complete the setup. For smaller groups, a portable system (“bidule”) is a lighter option, covered in the FAQ on soundproof booths.

Simultaneous

Consecutive

0time →

The speakerThe interpreter, on air

Consecutive interpreting

In consecutive, the speaker stops and the interpreter delivers. No booth, no receivers: a microphone, a notepad, and a system of notes built for the purpose.

The cost is time. A speech in consecutive takes about twice as long, so an agenda timed for simultaneous will not fit. What you gain is presence: the interpreter stands with the speaker, and both sides get a moment to think in the pause.

The notes hold structure. Nobody can write at the pace someone speaks and still listen, so the page carries the shape of the argument, the links between points, and every number and name exactly as said.

Q3
   rev +12%
      EU demand
B/ margins –
=> 2027: costs

Consecutive notes: the shape of the argument on paper, with numbers and names verbatim.

Consecutive suits site visits, small technical meetings, negotiations, toasts, and press conferences with a handful of questions. Speakers do best when they stop at complete thoughts: a paragraph at a time, more than a sentence and less than ten minutes.

Whispered interpreting (chuchotage)

When one or two people in a room need interpreting, the interpreter sits beside them and whispers the rendition as the speaker talks. It is simultaneous without a booth, so it still takes two interpreters for anything longer than a short session, and it only works with very small numbers: a third listener, and nobody hears clearly.

Liaison interpreting

At trade shows, plant visits, and meetings with foreign partners, a liaison interpreter moves with you and interprets each exchange as it happens, in both directions. The register shifts often in a single day: technical on the factory floor, commercial at the table, social at dinner.

It works best for short exchanges between a few people: a walk along a production line, or a stand visit that turns into a conversation. There are no slides to follow and the topic can change at the next machine, so the interpreter needs a clear picture of the people and the purpose of the visit before the day starts.

Like consecutive, liaison stretches the clock. Every exchange is said twice, so a visit planned for an hour in one language needs closer to two with an interpreter. Build that into the agenda, and into the time you ask of your guests.

It is tiring for the speakers too. Stopping every few sentences and picking up the thread again wears people down: after a couple of hours, they lose the line of their argument and start shortening what they say. For long sessions, such as a full-day meeting or a training course, liaison is the wrong format, and simultaneous with a portable system or booths keeps everyone fresher. (The interpreter tires as well, but at least that’s in the job description.)

Remote or on-site

Remote interpreting works well for routine updates, supplier check-ins, and briefings on familiar material. The travel it saves is real money.

It has its own risks. A dropped connection stops the meeting. A single speaker tile tells the booth almost nothing about the room. And the sound reaching the interpreter decides the quality more than anything else.

For negotiations, and for anything that can’t pause for a broadband problem, on-site is the safer choice. Remote or on-site is a decision about risk first and budget second.

When a third language joins

Start with two lists: the languages that will be spoken, and the languages that need to be heard. The second list drives the setup, because each language delivered needs its own booth and its own team.

When no booth works directly from a language, interpreters use relay: one booth interprets from the floor, and the others interpret from that booth. It is standard practice, and it needs planning, because everything downstream depends on the booth providing it.

What the interpreter needs from you

The single most useful thing you can do is send material early. Rough and early beats polished and late.

Material you consider too internal to share is often the most useful item in the pack, and it is covered by the same confidentiality as everything said in the room.

Check the room

The venue decides half of what your interpreters can do. The booth needs a direct view of the speakers and the screen, every person who speaks needs a microphone (Q&A included), and the booth itself needs space and ventilation for two people working a full day. Checked before the venue is booked, none of this costs anything.

A quick guide

Your event

A good fit

Conference or summit, several languages

Simultaneous, in booths

Board meeting or works council

Simultaneous; whispered for one or two listeners

Site visit, plant audit, trade show

Liaison or consecutive

Negotiation at a table

Consecutive or simultaneous, depending on time

Press conference

Consecutive for a few questions, simultaneous for a full session

Routine online update

Remote simultaneous

This is a general guide, and every event has a detail that changes the answer.
